What Can You Do With a Technician Licence?

The Technician licence is often described as the beginner ticket, which undersells it. Above 30 MHz a Technician holds the same privileges as an Amateur Extra: full power, all modes, every band. The restriction is concentrated on the high-frequency bands used for intercontinental contacts, and even there the licence is not shut out entirely.

Which bands can a Technician use?

Technicians get full privileges on all amateur bands above 30 MHz, including 6 metres, 2 metres, 1.25 metres and 70 centimetres. Below 30 MHz they hold segments of 10 metres for voice and data, plus Morse-only segments on 15, 40 and 80 metres. Power limits apply on the HF segments.

In practice most new operators spend their first year entirely on 2 metres and 70 centimetres, because that is where local repeaters and nets are. The 10-metre allocation becomes interesting during solar maximum, when the band opens for long-distance contacts with modest equipment and a simple wire antenna.

Can a Technician talk to other countries?

Yes, by several routes. Amateur satellites are open to Technicians and regularly carry contacts across continents. The 10-metre band opens for long-distance voice when solar conditions allow. Internet-linked repeater systems also bridge local VHF radios to distant ones, though purists distinguish that from radio propagation.

Satellite work is the underrated option. A handheld transceiver and a hand-held directional antenna are enough to work several amateur satellites in low Earth orbit, and Technicians face no restriction there. It requires tracking a pass and adjusting for Doppler shift, which is a genuine skill, but the equipment cost is low.

What can you not do as a Technician?

You cannot use most of the high-frequency spectrum for voice, which rules out the 20-metre band where much international contesting and casual long-distance conversation happens. You also cannot operate the voice portions of 40 and 80 metres. Upgrading to General removes nearly all of these restrictions.

This is the main reason operators upgrade. The General exam is another 35 questions from its own pool, and candidates who enjoyed studying for Technician usually find it a smaller step than expected. Many take both at one sitting, since the second element is free once you have passed the first.

Is a Technician licence useful for emergencies?

Yes, and this is where the VHF and UHF privileges matter most. Local emergency communication nets, ARES and RACES groups, and skywarn weather spotting all operate on bands a Technician holds in full. No upgrade is required to participate in organised emergency communications in your area.

Repeaters extend a handheld’s reach across a county, and many are backed by generators or batteries that outlast the mains supply. That is the practical case for the licence in a household preparedness plan: infrastructure that keeps working when the cellular network is saturated or down.

No. Every US amateur licence class runs for the same ten-year term regardless of level, with the same renewal window of 90 days before expiry and the same two-year grace period afterwards. Upgrading your class does not reset or extend the term of the underlying licence.
