A $5,000 technology decision can deserve more scrutiny than a $500,000 one. Owners scrutinise by price, and price is a poor guide to consequence.

The $500,000 project gets a steering committee, a contract review and a board update. The $5,000 decision gets made by a manager on a Tuesday with a company card.

Sometimes the Tuesday decision is the one that becomes infrastructure.

The small CRM a sales manager picked because it was easy is now where every customer record lives, and its data model decides what a "customer" is for the next decade.

The scheduling tool one department adopted now holds the field calendar, and three other tools have been integrated with it because it was there.

The spreadsheet a controller built to work around a reporting gap is now how the company closes the month, and nobody else can open it.

None of these were reviewed, because none of them cost enough to trigger a review. Each of them will cost six figures to replace, because the business grew around them.

The question that catches this is not "how much does it cost" but "what will depend on this in three years." A $5,000 tool that becomes the system of record for something deserves the same fifteen minutes of thought as a platform, and the fifteen minutes is the cheapest review the company will ever buy.
