# Analytical SaaS is losing the right to charge for answers

*By Giacomo Balli* | *Published: June 2, 2026*

Analytical SaaS companies are losing the right to charge for answers that can be generated directly from the underlying data.

For years, a large part of enterprise software economics depended on a simple model:

Store data in one system.
Sell an add-on to analyze it.
Sell another add-on to connect it to something else.

That stack made sense when extracting insight required specialized software.

A founder recently described cutting a 20-seat software deployment down to three seats. The team wasn’t using the application. They only needed access to the data. Once the data was connected to AI tools and messaging workflows, the software became a database with an expensive user interface.

The uncomfortable part is that many software products were never the source of the insight. They were the delivery mechanism.

When a model can query multiple systems at once, the bottleneck moves.

The scarce asset is no longer the dashboard.

It is the quality, accessibility, and structure of the data underneath.

That changes where value accrues.

Infrastructure platforms that store, organize, and govern enterprise data become more important.

Software that monetized reporting layers, workflow clicks, and navigation menus faces a harder question:

## If the user interface disappears, what exactly is the product?
