# Where does a customer complaint go in your business?

Where does a customer complaint go in your business, and how long until something changes because of it?

Coinbase's CEO told a story about their answer. An engineer gave the AI tools that use Coinbase a way to send feedback directly. Hundreds of messages land in Slack every day. Many are handed to AI coding agents, turned into fixes, and live a day later.

The AI writing the fixes is the impressive bit. The part an owner can copy is plainer: the feedback has one place to land, and someone routes it to whoever can change the thing.

In a lot of owner-run businesses, a complaint stops with whoever answered the phone. The dispatcher hears that the technician arrived without the part. The front desk hears that the reminder went out with the wrong time. Each one gets an apology, and nobody sees that it was the fourth this month.

Coinbase can ship a fix in a day because the problem lives in its own code. Most of yours live in a schedule, a supplier or a habit, and someone has to own each one.

So before anyone sells you a tool that "listens to your customers", pull last month's complaints from email, reviews and what the staff remember. Count how many were the same one, and what each cost: a second truck roll, a refund, a customer who did not rebook. Put that number next to the tool's price.
