QR Codes are picking up steam and become a real tool
[caption id="attachment_173" align="alignright" width="308"] Yes, this was a real picture.[/caption]
Seems like QR codes are finally strengthening their position as a marketer's tool (you can find an infographic, everyone loves them, here). I believe the problem that slowed its growth was that people weren't fully understanding them and therefore didn't think of ways to use them appropriately (plenty of examples here); Mashable said the wouldn't last with out being to subtle about it.
I remember reading this article from SpringWise a while back (video below) which seems quite cool but still proving how QR codes were something new & weird that people were only "playing" with.[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9c9vk_B54Sk]
The big news to day is that apparently QR codes actually surpassed direct mail according to this study.

This is also supported by the success that this very recent app has had in the Apple AppStore. Obviously it's strong point, when compared to the other, is that it creates "fancy" and colorful QR codes but it surely proves that there is an interest in this field.
However, I'm not sure if it's already time to blow the trumpets. First of all it is very easy to track how many people use a qr code whilst it's hard to know who came through direct mail. Also, direct mail has the additional scope of brand awareness and "reminding" the customer of your product (even if on a subconscious level).
If you're ready to give it a try, I'd give this good blopost a read and grab this app to make them stand out.
