What Is the Difference Between Automatic and Quartz?

This is the oldest argument in watches and it is usually framed badly, as though one type were objectively better. They optimise for different things. A quartz watch is a measuring instrument. A mechanical watch is a machine that also tells the time, and people buy it knowing a phone is more accurate.

How does each movement work?

A quartz movement passes current through a quartz crystal that oscillates 32,768 times per second, and a circuit divides that into one-second pulses driving the hands. An automatic movement stores energy in a mainspring wound by a rotor swinging with wrist motion, released through a gear train regulated by a balance wheel.

The accuracy gap follows directly from the oscillator frequency. A balance wheel typically beats between six and ten times per second; the quartz crystal beats over thirty thousand. Higher frequency means finer division of time and less sensitivity to position and disturbance.

How much more accurate is quartz?

A standard quartz watch runs within roughly fifteen seconds per month. A COSC-certified mechanical chronometer is permitted an average between −4 and +6 seconds per day, which is up to about three minutes per month. Quartz is roughly an order of magnitude better in ordinary use.

High-accuracy quartz movements tighten this to a few seconds a year through temperature compensation. The comparison is not close, and no mechanical watch made today competes on accuracy alone. That is not the axis on which mechanical watches are sold.

What does each cost to own?

A quartz watch needs a battery every two to five years, typically a modest cost including a pressure test if it is water resistant. A mechanical watch needs a full service every five to ten years costing from a few hundred upwards. Over decades the difference is substantial.

Against that, a mechanical movement is repairable more or less indefinitely, while quartz circuits eventually become unobtainable for discontinued models. A hundred-year-old mechanical watch can be restored; a thirty-year-old quartz watch may be unfixable if the module has failed and no replacement exists.

What about solar, kinetic and spring drive?

Several hybrids sit between the two. Solar quartz charges a rechargeable cell from light, removing battery changes. Kinetic uses a rotor to generate current for a quartz circuit.
