Almost every watch dial overstates what its owner can safely do, not because manufacturers lie but because the number is a laboratory measurement being read as a real-world instruction. A watch marked 30 metres has never been rated to be worn 30 metres underwater, and never was.

What does the depth rating actually measure?

Static pressure applied to a stationary watch in a test chamber, expressed as the equivalent depth of still water. ISO 22810 defines the procedure. Real swimming adds dynamic pressure from movement, so a hand entering water at speed can briefly exceed the static rating many times over.

Does water resistance degrade over time?

Yes. Gaskets are rubber or synthetic seals that harden, compress and crack over years, and a crown or pusher used regularly wears its seal faster. A ten-year-old watch that has never been pressure tested should be treated as having unknown water resistance regardless of the dial marking.

Pressure testing is inexpensive and takes minutes at most watchmakers. Doing it before a holiday costs far less than drying out a flooded movement afterwards, and it is the only way to know whether a rating still holds.
