The band crosses the Strait of Gibraltar west to east at around 10:47 local time. 102 of the 7,528 municipalities in the IGN table are inside it: Ceuta with 4 min 49 s, Tarifa with 4 min 38 s, Algeciras with 4 min 27 s, Cádiz with 2 min 55 s and Málaga with 1 min 49 s. The northern limit runs between Roquetas de Mar, which is in, and Almería city, which is not.
Every eclipse map makes the same promise: a wide band, two clean edges, and the feeling that all you have to do is stand on the right side of a line. For Spain in 2027 that line falls directly on the Andalusian coast, and there the drawing stops being useful. Here is the map, and then the handful of things the map cannot tell you.
What does this map show that a global one hides?
That duration collapses across very few kilometres in Spain. From the Strait corner with almost five minutes to Málaga city with under two is 130 kilometres of coast. A world map paints that same stretch as a uniform band, because at that scale 130 kilometres is the width of the stroke.
The gradient matters more than membership. Plenty of people already inside the band assume the spot makes no difference and plan the trip around the hotel. Between Málaga and Tarifa there are three minutes of corona, which is the difference between seeing a total eclipse and having time to look around during one.
Where does the shadow enter and leave?
It enters over the Gulf of Cádiz, crosses the Strait west to east and leaves for Morocco almost immediately. The passage over Spanish soil lasts only a few minutes: the umbra does not travel the country, it clips the southern tip.
That geometry explains the province list. Málaga contributes 54 municipalities, Cádiz 29, Granada 12 and Almería 5, plus Ceuta and Melilla. Inland Andalusia is out entirely, and so is the rest of the peninsula. It is the exact reverse of 2026, when the band crossed Spain diagonally and 3,675 municipalities saw totality.
Where does the map fail?
In the last twenty kilometres before the limit. Roquetas de Mar is inside with 1 min 31 s and Almería city, 16 kilometres away, is not. In the diagram above those two points are fourteen pixels apart: any stroke thick enough to see swallows the whole difference.
There is a trap in the magnitude figure too. The IGN publishes it to two decimals, so Almería reads 1.00 and is still outside, because the real value is fractionally under one and the rounding hides it. A textbook calculation, or a map interpolating between municipal centroids, puts Almería on the wrong side of the line without any effort at all.
And a centroid is not a person. A coastal municipality twenty kilometres long has one point on the map and several different answers inside it. If you are going to be near the edge, what decides is your coordinates rather than the name of the town.
What about the 2027 eclipse map for Europe?
Europe is almost entirely outside. Totality reaches only the southern tip of Spain, Ceuta, Melilla and Gibraltar. Mainland Portugal, France and Italy see a partial, deeper the further south you are. After Spain the track runs through Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt.
The Egyptian stretch near Luxor exceeds six minutes of totality, the longest over land in decades. That is why international eclipse chasers are looking at Egypt rather than the Strait. For anyone already living in Spain the comparison is different: four and a half minutes a day's drive away, against six minutes with a visa, a flight and a desert.
