AI code assistants do not make your team faster

AI code assistants do not make your team faster. They make your weak spots louder.

In property and casualty insurance, the moment you point GitHub Copilot or Anthropic Claude Code at a claims platform or policy admin system, the mess becomes the bottleneck. The model can write code, but it cannot guess intent hidden in a pile of helpers.

100% code coverage is not a virtue signal. It is how you force every new line to prove what it does. When your suite runs 10,000+ assertions in about a minute instead of 20-30 minutes, you can rerun it 4-5 times per change and still ship the same day.

The surprise is where the work goes. File names, folder structure, TypeScript types, OpenAPI contracts, Postgres checks, Biome formatting - they stop being “nice to have” and become the steering wheel for the agent.

Recent news is a reminder this is accelerating: Microsoft is reshaping teams around AI, Anthropic just bought Bun to push Claude Code further, and researchers keep showing how assistants can be hijacked with prompt injection. More output, more need for guardrails.

This makes me wonder how many modernization budgets should start with test speed and code structure before a single new feature goes on the roadmap.
