AI, Customer, and Pricing

Your next SaaS renewal should feel harder than last year. That is not procurement being annoying. It is the math changing.

In a mid-market 3PL, a shipment-visibility tool came up for renewal with a 12% increase. Instead of accepting, we asked: could an agent build the workflow we actually run in Microsoft Teams and email, without paying for 80% of the UI.

Using OpenAI and Anthropic models (and some Google Gemini prototyping), we connected an agent to our transportation management system and carrier portals. It drafted customer updates, flagged exceptions, and produced the exact weekly metrics our COO looks at. Manual touches dropped 55% and “where is my load” calls fell about 30% in 6 weeks.

When building gets cheaper, seat licenses and net revenue retention get shaky. The hidden tax is when a vendor deprecates an API or pushes you into a higher tier and ops ends up doing rework.

That is why Salesforce is leaning into Agentforce pricing, Microsoft is pushing Copilot agents, and ServiceNow is shipping agent orchestration. The winners will still be the tools with real moats like Stripe-level reliability, Slack-style network effects, and compliance you can actually audit.

This makes me wonder how many of our “must have” SaaS tools are really just create-edit-report workflows we could own behind our own access controls.
