Clear judgment when AI, vendors, and product choices muddy the roadmap.

AI isn't making "development" more valuable.

AI isn't making "development" more valuable.

It's making raw output less scarce.

When a studio can ship 3x the code with the same headcount, the client's first instinct is predictable: "Great, so it should cost less."

But the cost curve doesn't move where they think it does.

The bottleneck shifts upstream:

choosing the right problem defining what "done" means in the messy reality of the business sequencing changes without breaking operations deciding what not to build making the irreversible decisions reversible

AI accelerates production. It also accelerates confident mistakes.

That creates a new pricing fault line inside dev work:

Execution gets treated like a commodity (rate cards, tickets, velocity metrics).

Judgment starts to look like consulting (diagnosis, constraints, tradeoffs, risk removal).

Top 1% freelancers were already being hired for judgment, but it used to be hidden inside the code. AI makes the split visible, because the code becomes the cheap part.

Studios that keep selling "hours of building" will be forced into code-monkey pricing.

Studios that sell "reduced downside" will start looking suspiciously like consultants, even if they still deliver software.

The uncomfortable part: clients say they want faster delivery.

What they actually need is fewer expensive wrong turns.
