AI makes products look simpler while making them harder to run.

When a UI collapses into a prompt box, leaders assume complexity disappeared. It did not. It moved into places you cannot screenshot.

In a lot of SMBs modernizing without a real tech lead, the instinct is to celebrate fewer screens and faster demos. A Webflow flow that used to take ten clicks becomes one sentence. A Lovable prototype appears in a day. It feels like the risk went down.

But the product is no longer a set of deterministic steps. It is a behavioral system that needs to be trusted.

Ask what changed underneath: Model choice becomes a business decision. Memory design becomes a policy decision. Failure recovery becomes a customer experience decision. Guardrails and escalation paths become your real workflow.

This is the Twilio shift in miniature. When outcomes depend on interpretation, trust and interpretability stop being "nice to have" and start being the product.

The teams that get burned are the ones who fund the visible layer and starve the invisible one. They ship a simpler UI, then spend the next quarter explaining inconsistent behavior to customers.

The uncomfortable part is that "simpler" is now mostly an optics problem. And most orgs still budget like complexity lives in the screens.
