Apple will finally have their own niche hyper-performant secure models?
Most companies think the AI race is about building the biggest model. In practice it is about who controls the smallest ones.
The Apple–Google deal makes sense once you look at the operating constraints inside Apple. Shipping a frontier model is not the hard part. Shipping intelligence across billions of devices, under strict latency, battery, and privacy constraints, is.
That is why distillation matters more than the headline model.
Google builds the frontier system. Apple uses it as a teacher, compressing its capabilities into hundreds of smaller models that can run inside iPhones, inside Siri, and inside product features that must respond instantly.
The organizational advantage is subtle. Apple controls the last mile of computation and the user interface. The teacher model stays invisible while the ecosystem learns from it.
OpenAI and Anthropic demonstrated the power of a single general system. Apple is betting the real leverage appears when that intelligence fractures into thousands of task-specific models embedded throughout a product.
