Drone Delivery Is Easy. Getting Picked by AI Is Hard.

Drone delivery is the easy part. Getting picked by the AI that starts the shopping journey is harder. If a customer asks Gemini what to buy, do you even get a chance to compete?

Most operators see drones and think last mile advantage. So they chase speed: pilot a new delivery mode, add a shiny option, hope the market notices.

What Walmart is doing with Wing is interesting. But the quieter move is letting people shop inside Google’s Gemini, after already setting up a path through OpenAI's ChatGPT. That is not logistics. That is distribution.

When discovery shifts from search and apps to an assistant, the bottleneck becomes trust and structure. The assistant needs clean product data, real availability, clear substitutions, transparent fees, and a delivery promise you rarely miss.

If your inventory is “mostly right,” the AI will learn you are unsafe. If your policies are ambiguous, the AI will route around you. And if you do get recommended but fail fulfillment, you just trained the assistant to stop sending you customers.

I’ve watched teams nail 30 minute delivery in a pilot, then lose repeat orders because substitutions and refunds were chaos. The tech worked. The operating system didn’t.
