If I see one more person calling Generative AI a tool

If I see one more person calling Generative AI a tool, my brain is gonna start seeping out of my ears.

Tools are things people use when THEY are accomplishing a task. When a furniture maker uses her hands to connect pieces of wood and put everything together so that now a desk exists in a world that didn't and she uses a screwdriver to help, that's a tool.

When someone types an essay into a word processor of some kind instead of writing by hand, typing THEIR thoughts and feelings - that's them using a tool to write. Heck, Zotero and Scribbr, things that help you *format* your references - references YOU actually found and read and engaged with and you just wanna make sure you're differentiating formatting between APA, MLA etc, those are tools.

I'm not against technology. I'm not against a spellchecker, a word processor, a calculator, etc.

But GenAI is NOT a tool. When I write a song, I think about every note, every word, every measure, every everything. Whether I'm doing it on the piano or using MuseScore or whatever, there are TOOLS that help me realize a long, deep creative process I pore over.

Generative AI GENERATES a sloppy unspecific work product on behalf of someone. It REPLACES that care, the specificity, the thought, the work, the creativity, the everything. It's NOT a tool. It's a slop machine
