The Second Opinion

For owners and CEOs about to spend serious money on software, AI, an app, or a vendor.
An independent answer before the money moves.

Most people still think of Shopify as a website builder

Most people still think of Shopify as a website builder.

That version of Shopify barely exists anymore.

Wix, Squarespace, WooCommerce, BigCommerce…
they were all competing in the “build a store online” era.

Templates.
Themes.
Drag-and-drop pages.
Monthly subscriptions.

Then Shopify quietly changed the game.

It stopped behaving like a SaaS company and started behaving like infrastructure.

Today Shopify is:
• payments
• checkout
• financing
• POS
• merchant operations
• fulfillment rails

The storefront became the least important part.

That shift matters because AI is rapidly commoditizing the presentation layer.

Anyone can now generate a decent website in minutes.
AI agents will make that even more extreme.

But transactions?
Merchant identity?
Checkout?
Payments?
Operational infrastructure?

Those are much harder to replace.

Squarespace and Wix are still largely selling “the website.”

Shopify positioned itself underneath commerce itself.

That’s why one category got squeezed while the other strengthened.

The deeper lesson:
the most resilient software companies move closer to the flow of money and further away from the interface.

The UI is becoming temporary.

Infrastructure is becoming the moat.
